Verdict: for a first set, buy 20V MAX unless weight is your main concern. The cheapest drill and impact driver kit is DCK225D2 ($169.00, Home Depot). Compare the 12V kit's price with the 20V kits below; 20V has far more tools to add later. Choose 12V if you work overhead or in tight spaces and will never need a big saw or grinder.

What decides it
- Tool range: the 20V MAX line includes saws, grinders, outdoor tools and more. The 12V line is smaller and aimed at compact work.
- Batteries do not cross over by voltage class. A 12V pack does not run 20V tools. Pick the platform before you buy extra batteries.
- Weight: 12V tools are smaller and lighter. That is the whole case for them.
When you outgrow a kit, add bare tools: see own batteries, cheapest way to add tools.
